Dissecting the Facts and Myths About the Mangosteen Fruit and Diabetes
It seems like we are on a constant quest for better health, and the means to fight off diseases, in this case diabetes. We tend to navigate every possible avenue in search of a cure or just some relief. With all the wonderful and healthful properties contained in the mangosteen fruit, it is no wonder this fruit has been linked to the fight against diabetes, and it has been linked to it for many different reasons. However, is the linkage between the benefits of the mangosteen fruit and diabetes merely a myth, or is there some factual basis for this relationship? Let us separate the myth from fact in order to better understand the link between the mangosteen fruit and diabetes. Where does the Mangosteen Fruit Come From? Mangosteen, also known by its Latin name Garcinia mangostana L., originates from Southeast Asia, and has been traced to the Sunda Islands and Moluccas. Mangosteen is also commonly referred to as the "Queen of Fruit" or "Queen of Tropical Fruit" due mostly to its delicious taste and beneficial properties. This fruit, the mangosteen, grows on a tropical evergreen tree, which cannot thrive in temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. This made mangosteen extremely difficult to import, and on some levels, almost impossible to carry out until modern technology developed tools like green house facilities. Today, mangosteen is successfully grown in places like Hawaii, where it is able to thrive in its climate. On average, a mangosteen tree will grow anywhere from 7 to 25 meters in height and will grow at a slow rate. Depending on its size, the average mangosteen tree will produce five to ten fruits per tree, with the average fruit size being approximately two to three inches. The mangosteen fruit's exterior shell is slightly bitter in taste, while the white fruit inside has a sweet sour taste. The Mangosteen and its Qualities The "Queen of Fruit," the mangosteen, is known for having extremely high antioxidant properties, and a healthy amount of carbohydrates and fibers. Mangosteen is also high in several essential vitamins and minerals. This healthy fruit that is full of nutrients has been known to improve blood circulation and the immune system, assisting the body in its everyday fight against deficiencies and medical diseases. There has been a long association between mangosteen and diabetes, as consumption of the fruit has been helpful in lowering blood sugar levels. However, medically, there has been no clear evidence to indicate that these results have been solely due to the work of mangosteen. The antioxidants found in the mangosteen fruit can boost the immune system, and therefore assist in improving a persons overall health. When consumed on a daily and regular basis, mangosteen can help make one feel healthy, energized and rejuvenated. However, as it was shown between mangosteen and diabetes, scientific research has not shown the mangosteen to be a cure for any given disease.
It is important to note that the consumption of mangosteen does carry with it some side effects, such as dermatological ones: itching and skin rashes. If you should experience any of those symptoms, you should stop consuming mangosteen and see your physician. There still may be a beneficial connection between mangosteen and diabetes, though not one that cures the disease, but rather helps create a more healthy body that is able to manage the disease. So, add the mangosteen to your diet regularly and boost your bodys systems, but do not expect a quick cure for any illness. Remember, adding fruits to your diet is always beneficial to your body.
